NURSING
Due to the dynamic nature of the health professions, changes in either the curricula or course content or both may be made at any time.
Nursing students are expected to regularly attend all classes. The demonstration of professional attitudes and behaviors as defined in the policies established by the course instructors is considered critical. Therefore, failure to demonstrate these critical attitudes and behaviors may result in a failing grade in the course, regardless of the degree of progress in other areas.
Students are required to achieve and maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0 in their course of study with no less than a grade of 2.0 in each nursing lecture class and all required academic classes, and a grade of satisfactory in each clinical course. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student's exclusion from the program.
Transportation to and from the clinical facility is the sole responsibility of the students. In all nursing programs, students are required to purchase uniforms appropriate to the profession.
NURSING PROGRAM
ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCE DEGREE

The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program prepares the student to enter the profession of nursing. Upon successful completion of the required courses, the graduate is eligible to write a national licensure examination to become a registered nurse. The program is two years in length and includes liberal arts and nursing courses. However, a student may choose to complete any of the liberal arts courses prior to admission to the ADN program.
Pre-Admission Requirements (RN)
If you have previously attended college, you may already have a head start toward your nursing degree. Classes in algebra, biology, and chemistry may apply toward your admission requirements. Assessment tests may not be required. See an SC4 advisor for more information.
The pre-admission requirements are:
1. Achievement of overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 in high school or 2.7 in college is required. (See Acceptance Procedure)
2. The pre-admission requirement is biology and chemistry in high school or college OR BIO 171 Human Anatomy/Physiology I must be taken within eight years of admission to the program. All courses, nursing and liberal arts, must be completed with at least a grade of 2.0 "C".
Note: BIO 171 is a prerequisite course to the program (see model schedule).
Note: These courses must be completed by January 15 of the application year.
3. Successful completion of a college algebra course (G.P.A. 2.0 or better). An SC4 math assessment test with a score of 05 or above will fulfill this requirement; or SC4's HE 101 Math Related to Drug Administration may also be taken to meet this requirement.

4. SC4 assessment tests with the following minimum levels must be completed by January 15 of the application year. Arrangements for assessments can be made by calling the Academic Achievement Center at 810-989-5555.
• Reading Comprehension assessment level appropriate for college-level courses.
• Writing Score that indicates eligibility for SC4's ENG 101 - English Composition I.
• Math College intermediate algebra assessment test with a score of 05 or higher.
Note: Assessment tests are required if the student has not previously attended college.
Fulfillment of these criteria does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.
Applying for Admission
Persons seeking admission to the RN - Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program must:
1. Submit to the SC4 Admissions Office:
• A completed Application for Admission to SC4, indicating an ANTRN, Associate Degree Nursing program code, as the intended program of study
Note: Persons currently attending SC4 with a major other than ANTRN will need to change their major through the Career Services Office.
• A completed Nursing Program Application by January 15
• Official high school transcripts and/or GED scores by February 5
• Official college transcripts by February 5, if you have previously attended a college other than SC4.
2. Schedule a mandatory group advising appointment with the Nursing Department at 810-989-5675. Attending a group advising session is mandatory before application is considered.
Acceptance Procedure
1. Qualified applications will be reviewed by the Nursing Department in the winter semester for the ADN Program (program starts the following fall semester in August). Notification of applicant acceptances and rejections will be mailed.
Note: Selection G.P.A. for college students, is based upon college program related courses only or 10th and 11th grade coursework for high school students. In ranking applicants for acceptance into the program, the G.P.A. of college prerequisites and program required courses only will be computed. For high school students, G.P.A. will be computed using 10th and 11th grade college prep courses.
2. Accepted ADN applicants will be required to attend an ADN Program Orientation after admission. At the ADN Program Orientation session, course schedules for fall semester will be completed.
3. Upon admission and before classes begin in the fall semester, students will need to submit a completed Physical Examination Form, evidence of malpractice insurance and evidence of current CPR (forms will be provided by the Nursing Department during ADN Program Orientation).
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
BSN Transfer Option
For students planning to continue their education in nursing after attaining the Associate Degree in Nursing at SC4, must inform their academic advisor of this plan. Depending upon the program to which you plan to transfer, you may want to complete a course substitution. You may also want to incorporate courses that are required by all BSN programs, such as microbiology.
Note: U of M-Flint currently offers the BSN completion clinical courses in St. Clair County with theory courses online.
Applicants planning to pursue a career in registered nursing who have a criminal record of felony or misdemeanor convictions should contact the Nursing Department to determine employment restrictions based upon these convictions.
