    • With four freshmen in playing group, Skippers look to next season

The St. Clair County Community College golf team shot a third-round score of 325 Tuesday at National Junior College Athletic Association Regional.

The Skippers placed ninth in the event at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek with a 970 total.

Owens CC and Grand Rapids CC earned trips to the nationals by finishing first and second at 882 and 886, respectively. The national will get under way Tuesday at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN.

Grand Rapids made a late charge at Owens, shooting 292 but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 12-shot deficit from Monday’s 36-hole portion of the tournament.

SC4 Coach Dale Vos fielded a young squad at the regional with four freshmen in the six-player lineup.

“It looks good for next year, especially if we can add a couple of players to the group we have coming back,” Vos said.

Vos thought freshman Joey Falk (Yale) had a shot at earning a trip to the nationals as an individual. The qualifiers consisted of the five lowest scores from players not on the two qualifying teams.

“I thought Joey might have to shoot 72 to get in, but it turned out to be a 75,” Vos said. “As it was, he didn’t quite go low enough with an 80.”

Falk finished tied for 24th with a total of 234. Jordan Harms, a freshman and a former teammate of Falk’s at Yale, also shot an 80. Harms came in at 247.

Sophomore Nick Bartley (Marysville) completed his career with an 85 and 248 total. Rounding out the Skippers’ scoring was freshman Matt Fernandez (Port Huron Northern) with an 82 and 248 total.

Also playing his final collegiate match was sophomore Trevor Spencer (Marysville), who recorded a 252. Freshman Grant Moore (Northern) shot 265.

While there were thunderstorms around the Battle Creek area, Vos said the tournament caught a break as golfers stayed dry for the two days.
