    • Skippers stun district field for fourth district title in five years

MVP Leah Humes scores 27 points in 65-53 victory over Macomb in title game

The SC4 women’s basketball team certainly didn’t have an easy road in winning a fourth district title in five years.

The Skippers (21-10) made three two-hour bus trips in five days to Delta College and brought home three victories.

With a 65-53 decision over Macomb CC Saturday, March 5, No. 5-seeded squad cut down the nets and qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament March 15-19 at Johnson County CC in Overland Park, KS.

SC4 qualified for the nationals three consecutive seasons before losing in the district finals a year ago to No. 5 seed Schoolcraft College. The Skippers, under coach Michael Groulx, were a fifth seed when they earned their first trip to the nationals in the 2011-12 season.

Coach Akilah Edmondson’s squad finished fifth in the MCCAA Eastern Conference standings with a 10-6 record. The Skippers traveled to Delta Tuesday, March 1 in a heavy snow storm for a District H quarterfinal game and came away with a 77-71 victory over the Pioneers. Delta defeated the Skippers twice in league play.

The Skippers knocked off top seed Oakland CC 67-64 in the semifinals Thursday, March 3. The two squads had split league meetings.

In the finals, SC4 took its second victory from Macomb in three meetings behind a 27-point, 17-rebound performance by sophomore guard Leah Humes.

Sophomore center Kendall Stoll, an Anchor Bay grad, followed up Humes’ effort with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the finals. Sophomore Madison Valko, a Marysville grad, added eight points and Briann Alspaugh pulled down nine rebounds. Humes chipped in with five assists and two steals.

In the semifinal victory against Oakland, Humes led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots and three assists. Valko tossed in 12 points, while Stoll (16 rebounds) and Richmond grad Carlie Thueme (eight rebounds) each had eight points.

Edmondson, who is in her first year as the head coach, receieved the Coach of the Year award. She was an assistant coach for the first time with the 2014-15 SC4 squad. Humes was named the most valuable player of the tournament and landed a spot on the All-Tournament Team along with Alspaugh.
