  • SC4 student newspaper wins 11 awards

    The Erie Square Gazette, St. Clair County Community College's student newspaper, captured 11 awards in the Michigan Community College Press Association's annual contest.

    The Erie Square Gazette awards are:

    • Erie Square Gazette staff, third place for overall newspaper design and honorable mention for general excellence.
    • Editor Erick Fredendall of Port Huron, honorable mention for student journalist of the year and second place for humorous columns.
    • Contributor Matthew Olack of St. Clair, first place for cartoon editorial.
    • Contributor Kaylee Bert of Jeddo, second place for sports news photo.
    • Staff Writer Donald Lierman of Imlay City, third place for sports news story and honorable mention for sports feature story.
    • Staff Writer Jenelle Kalaf of Port Huron, Copy Editor Angela Stoecklin of Columbus Township and Erick Fredendall, third place for in-depth reporting. 
    • Former Web Editor Rebecca Kelly of Marysville, honorable mention for cartoon editorial.
    • Photo Editor Elizabeth Whittemore of Algonac, honorable mention for news photo.

    The Erie Square Gazette's advisor is Professor John Lusk.

    The awards were presented Saturday, April 5, at the association's annual conference at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. The conference and contest are open to Michigan community colleges that produce a newspaper biweekly or less frequently. Several professionals in the newspaper business served as judges for the contest.
