SC4 students win recognition for writing, art

Several St. Clair County Community College students have received recognition for their work in the 49th edition of Patterns, a literary and arts publication featuring student work.

Patterns is the longest continually published community college literary and arts magazine in the state. The writing, art and photography work of 32 selected students is featured this year.

The following awards were given to students during a Patterns reception Sunday, April 22, at the Port Huron campus:

  • First-place poem — Rebecca Frasier of Port Huron for I Hear Things.
  • Second-place poem — Roger York of Marysville for Fail.
  • Kathy Nickerson Award, poetry — Joe Kane of Lakeport for Rave.
  • First-place story — Sarah C. Grimski of Clyde Township for An Accidental Alteration.
  • Second-place story — Eryn Slankster of Port Huron for Beautiful Infatuations.
  • Richard J. Colwell Award, story — Joe Kane of Lakeport for The Beginning.
  • Eleanor B. Mathews Writing Award — Joe Kane of Lakeport.
  • First-place art — Matthew Winkler of Kimball Township for Early Morning.
  • Second-place art — Kevin Stabenow of Port Huron for Geometric Wood.
  • Third-place art — Simon Carter of St. Clair for Second Chance.
  • Patrick Bourke Fine Arts Award, art — Andrew Zyrowski of East China Township for Cornered Carton.

Judging the awards were novelist Eileen Pollack and poet Raymond McDaniel.

Attached is a list of all of the students whose work was honored by being selected for publication in Patterns.
