SC4 student newspaper wins five awards

The Erie Square Gazette, St. Clair County Community College’s student newspaper, captured five awards in the Michigan Community College Press Association’s annual contest.

The awards are:

  • Erie Square Gazette staff, first place, for headline writing, “Crying Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home.” (The headline was written by Editor-in-Chief Aharic Bouy, a sophomore from Wales Township).
  • Production Director Cindy Badley, a sophomore from Marysville, first place, for her ad, “River Port Tavern Ad.”
  • Production Editor Matt Makowski, a sophomore from Marysville, honorable mention, for his news story, “Renewal of accredited excellence.”
  • Erie Square Gazette production staff (consisting of Cindy Badley and Matt Makowski), honorable mention, for front page design.
  • Erie Square Gazette staff, honorable mention, for overall design.

The Erie Square Gazette’s advisor is Professor John Lusk.

The awards were presented Saturday, April 28, at the association’s annual Press Day Conference at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. The conference and contest are open to Michigan community colleges that produce a newspaper biweekly or less frequently. Several professionals in the newspaper business served as judges for the contest.
