SC4’s The Spiral Studio to feature local artist

St. Clair County Community College’s The Spiral Studio in February will feature SC4 alumnus and local business owner Duane Collins, who will work on flatwork pottery.

The Spiral Studio is 300 square feet of workspace at Studio 1219 in Port Huron for SC4 students, faculty and alumni. Each month, an SC4 art instructor or alumni artist is featured working in the studio.

SC4 students and alumni are welcome to use the studio to create their own work, converse with the guest artist, and network with fellow students and artists at Studio 1219. The public is welcome to visit and discuss art with The Spiral Studio artists.

Collins, 56, of Port Huron is a self-taught sculptor who owns Elements Pottery. He attended SC4 from 1968 through 1971. Collins moved to Colorado in 1972 to begin his career in pottery. He returned to Michigan in 1982 and has continued to refine his pottery skills over the past 30 years.

“I want people to see that the medium of clay can be approached in many different ways,” he said. “Clay is the single most medium that can be interpreted more than any other type of art.”

The Spiral Studio and Studio 1219 hours are noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday and noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
