SC4 honor society chapter recognized for leadership, service, scholarship

The Lambda Mu chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at St. Clair County Community College was recognized as a top chapter during the 90th annual Phi Theta Kappa International Convention. SC4 students and alumni attended the convention, which was April 3, 4 and 5 in Philadelphia.

The chapter won:

  • A Service Hallmark Award for projects that included a ski-dueling fund-raiser Oct.6 for the American Cancer Society and Earth-friendly projects, such as highway clean-up efforts.
  • A Scholarship Hallmark Award for its scholarship projects, which included a regional honors conference Nov. 2 and an honors symposium Feb. 16.
  • A Distinguished Chapter Award, placing it in the top 35 chapters in the country based on scholarship, leadership and service categories.
  • A Distinguished Advisor Award for SC4 Professor Tom Obee, Lambda Mu advisor and coordinator of the Phi Theta Kappa Michigan Region.
  • A Distinguished Officer Award for SC4 student Ted Parkhurst of China Township for his work as vice president of leadership.

SC4 students Steve Durette of Fort Gratiot and Parkhurst presented an educational forum, “Planning and Hosting a Regional Conference,” during the conference.

Other SC4 students who attended included Natalie Baxter of Port Huron, Casey Capps of Kenockee Township, Christine Day of Port Huron, Yvonne Gabriel of Kenockee Township, Drew Gorzen of St. Clair, Natalie Grandy of Port Huron, Janice Kenny of Marysville, Rachel Kobylas of Brown City, Nicole Ledsworth of Kimball Township, Jason McCoy of Port Huron, Kenda Pakulski of St. Clair, Matthew Rodger of St. Clair and Grant Rumley of Marysville. SC4 professors Obee and Paul Bedard, adjunct instructor and Lambda Mu co-advisor Angela Heiden, and alumnus Daniel Martiny also attended. In addition, SC4 President Dr. Rose Bellanca and Dean of Instruction Denise McNeil attended a joint session with Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.
