Applications available for SC4 nontraditional occupation grants

St. Clair County Community College students pursuing occupations considered nontraditional for their gender can go online to download an application for tuition assistance as part of a Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth grant.

SC4 received the $15,000 state grant for recruiting and retention of students in programs that are considered nontraditional for their gender. The funding will provide grants of up to $564 for up to 26 students who enroll in these occupational programs.

Money is available for new students in occupational programs or transfer students from existing occupational programs into nontraditional programs.

Nontraditional programs are those where one gender makes up less than 25% of those employed in that field. For women, these fields generally include computer science, corrections and criminal justice, international business, technology and welding. For men, these fields generally include early childhood education, nursing and secretarial science, including legal and medical.
