SC4 student newspaper wins seven awards

The Erie Square Gazette, St. Clair County Community College’s student newspaper, captured seven awards in the Michigan Community College Press Association’s annual contest.

The awards are:

  • Production Editor Stacy Schlaudraff, a sophomore from St. Clair, second place, for an informational graphic comparing prices during the Great Depression versus today; honorable mention, for a feature photo of elks during mating season; and honorable mention, for best use of photos and graphics.
  • Photo Editor Kelli Warshefski, a sophomore from Burtchville Township, honorable mention, for a sports news photo of a Port Huron Icehawks hockey game, and honorable mention, for a sports news photo of an SC4 Lady Skippers basketball game.
  • Sports Editor Donald Lierman, a sophomore from Imlay City, honorable mention, for a sports feature story about SC4 volleyball Coach Charles Weisner.
  • On the lighter side, the staff tied for first place for the Turkey Award, for an obvious spelling error in a headline.

The Erie Square Gazette’s advisor is Professor John Lusk.

The awards were presented Saturday, April 4, at the association’s annual Press Day Conference at Michigan State University. The conference and contest are open to Michigan community colleges that produce a newspaper biweekly or less frequently. Several professionals in the newspaper business served as judges for the contest.
