SC4 to offer firefighter academy

St. Clair County Community College’s Fire and Emergency Services Institute will offer a firefighter academy beginning in September on the college’s Port Huron campus.

The college’s sixth firefighter academy features updated curriculum and will run Monday through Friday from Sept. 8 to Nov. 12.

The academy includes instruction for Fire Fighter I certification, Fire Fighter II certification, live burn interior firefighting, and hazardous materials awareness and operational level state of Michigan certification training.

A prerequisite to the academy is successful completion of a firefighter agility test conducted Saturday, Aug. 1, at SC4 in Port Huron. SC4 will accept certain fire agility tests from another college as long as the test was taken within one year of Aug. 1, 2009. The student must provide a certificate of successful completion to SC4.

The cost for the agility test is $50, and the academy cost is $2,600. Approved self-contained breathing apparatus and firefighter turnout gear are required for the academy and are available for renting if students do not have the equipment.

Interested students must register for both the agility test and academy by calling training coordinator Kevin Powers at (810) 989-5740 or by calling (810) 989-5788. Deadline is Wednesday, July 29. When calling, provide mailing address and contact information to where the information should be sent. A packet will be sent to all interested candidates with additional academy information.
