October 22, 2009 SC4 to host Great Lakes Maritime Academy information sessions St. Clair County Community College will host representatives from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy on Wednesday, Nov. 11, for two informational sessions about the academy and potential careers on the water in the maritime industry. The free informational sessions will be at 3 and 7 p.m. in Room 150 of the college’s Citizens First Michigan Technical Education Center, corner of Erie Street and Glenwood Avenue, Port Huron. Rear Adm. John Tanner, academy superintendent, and John Berck, academy director of admissions and enrollment management, will present along with Steven Fosgard, SC4 associate dean of instruction. SC4 and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City have an articulation agreement that allows students to take one year of core classes at SC4 and then transfer to the academy in Traverse City. According to the academy, graduates have 100% job placement rates. They are in demand in all types of vessels, including freighters, tankers, cruise ships and research ships. Upon graduation from the academy, students are qualified to sail the Great Lakes or oceans. They will have earned two degrees: an associate degree in maritime technology from Northwestern Michigan College and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ferris State University. The entire program takes about four years to complete. The academy is a division of Northwestern Michigan College and is the nation's only freshwater academy. Students at the academy can choose from either a deck officer program or engineering officer program. Visit www.sc4.edu/maritime for details about the academy program. Those interested in attending either informational session are asked to RSVP to Lisa Francis at (810) 989-5574 or lfrancis@sc4.edu. ###
