SC4 to host daylong discussion about issues of human refuse

St. Clair County Community College has announced its 13th annual Global Awareness Day for Tuesday, Nov. 17.

This year’s Global Awareness Day theme is “International Issues with Disposal of Human Refuse.” Events will offer diverse views in presentations throughout the day on topics such as nuclear waste, industrial bi-products, human waste, electronic equipment and other international issues.

All events are free and in the Fine Arts Theatre on the college’s Port Huron campus. Global Awareness Day is presented by the college’s International Cultural Education Committee and Global Awareness Task Force.

The day’s schedule is:
  • 9 to 9:50 a.m. — “Monitoring the St. Clair River Watershed.” Kristen Jurs, president of Friends of the St. Clair River Watershed, will discuss pollution and monitoring issues affecting the St. Clair River.
  • 10 to 10:50 a.m. — “Poison and Profits: The Global Waste Trade.” SC4 Professor Jackie Jablonski will discuss what happens to waste, including recycling, that people produce each week.
  • 11 to 11:50 a.m. — “Digital Dumping Ground.” SC4 Professor Kathy Ruby will discuss what happens to modern electronic products when they break or become obsolete.
  • 1 to 1:50 p.m. — “This isn’t Your Grandparents’ Recycling.” SC4 Professor Kraig Archer will discuss a 21st century approach to designing human structures and habitations that eliminate waste and create a sustainable future.
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m. — “St. Clair County’s Bio-reactor.” Matt Williams, St. Clair County Landfill director, will discuss how bio-reactor technology of converting trash to a commercially viable and usable product is happening in St. Clair County.
