SC4 to offer culinary arts training St. Clair County Community College’s Workforce Training Institute is offering several culinary arts programs this winter on the Port Huron campus. Two programs are designed to quickly prepare students for employment in the food service field as either a cook or chef. Both programs run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from Jan. 3 to Oct. 6. Culinary Arts Program (Basic) — Learn the culinary basics required to work as a cook or chef. Learn relationships between nutrition and health, techniques for the ServSafe Sanitation certificate, and culinary terms, equipment and utensil use. A 160-hour externship is required. Culinary Arts ManageFirst (Basic+) — This training expands students’ training beyond the culinary arts basic program by covering cost control and hospitality and restaurant management. A 160-hour externship is required. For each program, students must complete pre-assessment testing at least one week prior to class start date. In addition, individual culinary arts classes begin the week of Jan. 3: Culinary Sanitation — Runs from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday from Jan. 3 to 26. This class is designed for supervisory personnel of food service establishments. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a ServSafe Sanitation Certificate. Culinary Techniques — Runs from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from Jan. 31 to July 13. Completion of this class, along with Culinary Sanitation, will qualify participants for a Certificate in Culinary Arts – Prep Cook.
