SC4 alumna sings at tribute to President George H.W. Bush

St. Clair County Community College alumma Heather Blake of Falls Church, Va., sang in the adult choir at a tribute to President George H.W. Bush on Monday, March 21, in Washington, D.C.

The event, "All Together Now: A Celebration of Service," was at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and will air at 8 p.m. Monday, March 28, on NBC.

The event honored Bush for his commitment to promoting the value of service and volunteerism in the United States.

Blake was a member of the 100-person adult choir. She and the choir sang with Kid Rock and Garth Brooks during the event.

The special brought together four former presidents, including George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Artists also performing included Sheryl Crow, Cee Lo Green, Reba McEntire, Sam Moore, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Carrie Underwood.

"I thought it would be an incredible powerhouse of sound, and it was," Blake said of the event. "I was trying to soak it all in. I got caught up in the moment for a little while."

The adult choir was made up of members of local church choirs. Blake performed because she is a member of the music program at First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Va., one of the groups invited to participate.

Blake grew up in St. Clair and graduated from St. Clair High School. She graduated from SC4 in 2004 and went on to earn her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Saginaw Valley State University. She teaches second grade at Jamestown Elementary School in Arlington, Va.
