SC4 plans student-run conference on issues impacting children

St. Clair County Community College students will examine global issues that impact children during a daylong conference Wednesday, March 30, in the Fine Arts Theatre on the college’s Port Huron campus.

The student-run conference, All the Children of the World, will focus on issues such as adoption, child labor, child soldiers, child victims of war, civil rights for children, education of girls, epidemics, immunizations, orphanages, population and world hunger.

The conference is presented by SC4's Global Awareness Club.

Presenters and topics include:

Session 1, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

  • Sierra Sullivan – 8:30 to 9 a.m.: Human trafficking of children.
  • Denise Crochrell – 9 to 9:30 a.m.: Humanitarian efforts to educate and provide basic needs for children in Africa.

Session 2, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

  • Ryan Dankenbring – 9:45 to 10:25 a.m.: Child anti-prostitution ministry that frees children in Mexico.
  • Twana Pinskey – 10:25 to 10:45 a.m.: Helping at a battered woman's shelter in Honduras.

Session 3, 11 a.m. to noon

  • Joyce Dennison – 11 to 11:20 a.m.: Harm that pollution causes to children globally.
  • Jen Levalo – 11:20 a.m. to noon: World hunger.

Mobilization for Action, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

  • Matthew Boyd, Rachel Kobylas, Twana Pinskey, Raymond Robinson and Liz Whittemore – SC4 students who went to a conference in New York City will share what they learned.
