The game was dedicated to the memory of Mary M. Barss and the Mary M. Barss Nursing Scholarship. The Barss family of Port Huron was one of the premier sponsors of the event.

Separately from the game, the Barss family made a $20,000 donation to create an endowment fund with the SC4 Foundation to establish an annual nursing scholarship for St. Clair County Community College students. A donation check was presented to foundation board of directors member Christine Newberry on center ice at the game. Mary M. Barss' son, Ted Barss, presented the check.
