Students earn awards in Science and Engineering Fair at SC4

Eight students won trophies and 28 earned blue ribbons in the 16th annual St. Clair County Science and Engineering Fair sponsored by St. Clair County Community College.

Prizes were presented at an awards ceremony Sunday, March 25, on SC4's Port Huron campus.

Judging by a team of independent judges was Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24. The fair drew 87 St. Clair County students in grades four through 12 for a total of 60 projects.

Projects included those related to earth and space science, life science and physical science.

The fair previously was sponsored by the St. Clair County Regional Educational Service Agency. This is the first year it was sponsored by SC4.

Major award winners and their projects were:

  • Emily Donnellon of Emmett, 11th grade, Yale High School, High School Best of Show, Egg Shell Strength.
  • Drew Morgan of Clyde Township, 11th grade, Yale High School — High School Grand Award for Best Engineering Project, Drawdio: An Instrument of Science.
  • Aishah Ahmed, eighth grade, and Sophia Ahmed, seventh grade, both of Fort Gratiot, both of Fort Gratiot Middle School, Junior High School Best of Show, Variations in Escherichia Coli Treatment.
  • Alexandria Jaronoski of China Township, fifth grade, Pine River Elementary School, Fifth Grade Best of Show, No Bones About It.
  • Alexander Currie of China Township, fifth grade, Pine River Elementary School, Fifth Grade Grand Award, Don't Let the Cold Out of the Bag.
  • Christopher Jaronoski of China Township, fourth grade, Pine River Elementary School, Fourth Grade Best of Show, Heart-y Boxing.
  • Avery Wilson of St. Clair, fourth grade, Pine River Elementary School, Fourth Grade Grand Award, A Slick Clean Up.

The major award winners also won blue ribbons.

In addition, these students, listed by school, also won blue ribbons:

  • Gearing Elementary School — Lea Kemle, Faith Koester and Ally Kue, all fifth grade.
  • Indian Woods Elementary School — Brady Butler, Aubree Johnston and Erin Rich, all fifth grade.
  • Pine River Elementary School — Mark Estapa, fourth grade, and Jared Falkner, fifth grade.
  • St. Mary/McCormick Catholic Academy — Janice Gibbons and Adriana Mirabelli, both seventh grade.
  • Yale High School — Robert Earehart, Cody Edgerton, Justin Fields, Taylor Fisher, Nina Galante, Brian Heidt, Ryan Richards, Keeley Robinson, Vanessa Wood and Cory Yelencich, all 11th grade.
