SC4 student newspaper wins 11 awards

The Erie Square Gazette, St. Clair County Community College's student newspaper, captured 11 awards in the Michigan Community College Press Association's annual contest.

The awards were given for work published from March 1, 2011, through Feb. 29, 2012.

The Erie Square Gazette awards are:

  • Editor-in-Chief Twana Pinskey of Kimball Township and Webmaster Clay Kimball of Port Huron, division two first place for “Heart to Heart” video production-audio slide show.
  • Managing Editor Alyssha Ginzel of Port Huron, division one first place for editorial column news writing, division one third place for feature photo and division two second place for headline news writing.
  • Copy Editor Danielle Kennedy of St. Clair, division two third place for headline news writing.
  • Production Editor Zack Penzien of St. Clair, division one honorable mention for cartoon-entertainment.
  • Staff Writer Jesse Schienke of Port Huron, division one honorable mention for sports news story.
  • Staff Writer Mike Scott of Port Huron, division one honorable mention for sports news story.
  • Erie Square Gazette staff, division two third place general excellence award and division two honorable mention for overall page design.
  • On the lighter side, the staff received a division one first place for the Turkey Award, for providing incorrect demographic details for a subject in a photo poll.

The Erie Square Gazette's advisor is Professor John Lusk.

The awards were presented Saturday, April 21, at the association's annual conference at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. The conference and contest are open to Michigan community colleges that produce a newspaper biweekly or less frequently. Several professionals in the newspaper business served as judges for the contest.
