SC4 to offer firefighter academy

St. Clair County Community College will offer a firefighter academy beginning in August on the college's Port Huron campus.

The firefighter academy will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from Aug. 27 to Nov. 2.

A prerequisite to the academy is successfully completing a firefighter agility test conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the college. SC4 will accept certain fire agility tests from another college as long as the test was taken within one year of Aug. 4. The student must provide a certificate of successful completion to SC4. Students who can't attend Aug. 4, but still would like to begin the academy Aug. 27, should call (810) 989-5753 for more information.

The academy includes instruction for Fire Fighter I certification, Fire Fighter II certification, live burn interior firefighting, hazardous materials awareness and operational level state of Michigan certification training.

Self-contained breathing apparatus rental is available if needed. Turnout gear, meeting current standards, also is required. Rental options will be made available.

For more information or to register for the agility test and academy, call (810) 989-5788.
