SC4 to offer Paramedic Academy

St. Clair County Community College will offer a Paramedic Academy on the college's Port Huron campus.

The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday from Aug. 28 to May 30.

The class is designed for students who have completed an Emergency Medical Technician program. The academy is a more than 900-hour training program that includes more than 500 hours of clinical and field internship following the 1998 National Standard Curriculum for Paramedics.

Students will review skills learned in the EMT program and expand on those skills with new lessons in pharmacology, cardiology and advanced airway techniques.

Students must be age 18 or older, have a high school diploma or GED, and have a valid EMT license and a current Basic Life Support card. A $10 fee will be collected the first week of class for a background check (no felony convictions). Students also must have a physical, the Hepatitis B vaccination series started, MMR and varicella zoster vaccinations, a current tetanus shot, flu shot, a negative five-panel drug screening and a negative TB test completed by the second week of class.

Students must complete pre-assessment testing at least one week prior to class start date.
