New SC4 course explores comics as art

St. Clair County Community College (SC4) offers All About Comics during its six-week spring semester beginning May 16.

The course, developed by SC4 graphic design instructor John Olson, will explore the history of comic books and comics as an art form. Olson has worked as a production designer and editor-in-chief at Sundragon Comics, and did graphic design consulting at Iowa State University. He also has published comic books and is co-owner of Eclectic Comics, a publishing house in Minnesota.

In All About Comics, students will discuss comics as literature and examine creative methods of the comic book industry, including concept generation, character creation, and scripted writing.  Students will develop their own concepts, and take them to layout and beginning illustration.  The course will also cover specific job designations in the industry of comic publishing such as editing, writing, penciling, inking, coloring, and lettering.

The three-credit course meets Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  To register call SC4 Enrollment Services at 810-989-5500.  For a complete schedule of day, evening, and online spring classes visit www.sc4.edu/wave .
