SC4 begins new workforce training program for out-of-school youths St. Clair County Community College will launch a new workforce readiness training program in September for out-of-school young adults ages 18-21. Youth Elective Studies (YES!) lets students chart their own future, with a series of practical sessions delivered on an “as-needed” basis. The free training will begin on September 2 at the SC4 M-TEC in Port Huron. Students may enter the program at any time. SC4’s Workforce Development Program Coordinator Doreen MacDonald described YES! as an intensive and individualized program that addresses educational achievements, pre-paration for employment, and seeks to develop leadership and citizenship potential of each eligible youth participant. “YES! reflects the college's realization that each applicant to the program comes to us with unique needs, abilities and goals,” MacDonald said. YES! students will enjoy the freedom of SC4’s state-of-the-art open-entry open-exit lab in the Citizens First Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC). This innovative environ-ment allows students to complete training and advance to new levels at their own pace. The five training paths offered are: § Academic Improvement - focuses on updating skills to adult secondary education levels, which have high school equivalencies of 10th –12th grade § GED Preparation -- focuses on preparing the student to achieve successful scores on the Official GED (General Educational Development) Exam § Workplace Computer Skills -- offers training in Microsoft Office Suite products such as Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.-- including Microsoft certification tests § Career Readiness & Exploration -- features seminars related to job readiness and development; also offers internships/job shadowing § Preparation for Post-Secondary Education -- features seminars related to college preparation and entrance; also offers basic skills upgrade, entrance testing, applications for financial aid, etc. To take advantage of this free training program, please contact Workforce Trainer Cheryl Cisco at St. Clair County Community College at 810-989-5789 or email ccisco@sc4.edu. Eligibility is determined on an individual basis through requirements set by Michigan Works! agencies. The program is funded through a contract with the Macomb/St. Clair Workforce Development Board, by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), through the Michigan Department of Career Development. It is an equal opportunity employer program, and auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities. |
