Online registration coming to SC4

PORT HURON, MI - For St. Clair County Community College (SC4) students, the days of waiting in line to register for classes will soon be replaced with the ease of building a class schedule and registering anywhere they have access to the Internet. By summer 2003 the college plans to have a web platform called WebAdvisor in place. It will allow students to access a variety of online services and information, through the SC4 web site.

WebAdvisor acts as a portal, or single entry point of access, for students and employees. Customized information for each student or employee appears when the user logs in to WebAdvisor. Users can access information ranging from campus events to college deadlines to class specific messages.

According to Cindy Rourke, SC4's dean of learning resources technology, "Through the login process, WebAdvisor recognizes each individual user's profile. The information that is delivered to our users can be as targeted as a message from an instructor to students in his or her particular class."

WebAdvisor will allow students, faculty, and staff at SC4 to access personal and college data maintained by a variety of campus offices, including the academic records & registration office, the business office, and the human resources office.

When fully implemented by SC4, students will be able to check grades and generate a copy of their class schedule and update personal information such as addresses, telephone numbers, and emergency contact information. Eventually they will also be able to pay for classes, generate a summary of their account, check on their financial aid status or check their grade point average. The most awaited feature, though, is class registration through the Internet.

WebAdvisor gives students access to the school's information system that allows class registration. Students can receive complete information on classes available during a given semester and obtain up-to-date information as to which courses are still open for registration. Students can even place themselves on a waitlist for those classes that are full in hope of an opening becoming available. The online system is sophisticated enough to recognize whether or not a student has met the course prerequisites for the classes in which they are attempting to enroll, based on their history with SC4. A student identification number and personal identification number (PIN) are attached to each individual's account to ensure the confidentiality of information that can be accessed by the system.

"The benefits of this web site upgrade are incredible," says Dr. Carol Nowakowski, SC4's dean of student services. "Our students will become more self-sufficient and they will be able to save time. Many of our students hold part-time or full-time jobs and are looking for a way to cut down on the amount of time they have to spend with the administrative details of their education. Every day, we get questions from students asking if they can register through our web site. Next year we'll be able to say 'Yes'."

Other colleges with similar systems have reported it is very popular with students.
The online services will be accessed by logging on to the college's web site at www.SC4.edu. Students who do not have their own Internet access will be able to use the online services through the computers at SC4.

Implementation of WebAdvisor and the online services is part of a larger effort by the college to upgrade technology at SC4. The informational portion of WebAdvisor are targeted to be operational by summer 2003 followed by online registration. The feature allowing online payments will follow and by the end of 2003 the college's system upgrade is targeted to be complete.

Registration is going on now for winter 2003 classes that begin January 13. The class schedule can be viewed online at www.SC4.edu. To register call 810-989-5500 or email Enrollment@SC4.edu.
