Dan DeGrow named MCCA's Outstanding Alumnus Senator Dan L. DeGrow, of Port Huron, Michigan, has been awarded the 2002 Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) Outstanding Alumnus Award. Senator DeGrow graduated from St. Clair County Community College (SC4) with an Associate degree in liberal arts and was named "Scholar Athlete of the Year" in 1973.
Dr. Rose Bellanca, President of St. Clair County Community College presented the award at the MCCA summer workshop on July 19 in Traverse City. "Senator DeGrow is a very special man who has worked tirelessly and effectively to improve the quality of life for his constituents," said Dr. Bellanca. As Michigan's Senator from the 27th District, Dan DeGrow represents Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair Counties. Having been elected by his colleagues in 1998 to Senate Majority Leader, Senator DeGrow is the highest-ranking member of the Senate. In this role, he is responsible for setting the chamber's legislative priorities and serving as the Senate's spokesperson. In addition to his duties as Majority Leader, Senator DeGrow chairs the Michigan Legislative Council. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his legislative work The MCCA is organized to realize the state-level goals of its member colleges and to advocate the benefits of community college services throughout the State of Michigan. For the past 35 years, the MCCA has considered nominees from all 28 community colleges in the state. This annual award is presented to a community college alumnus based upon achievement in one's professional career, service to humanity, honors received and a strong commitment to the purpose and philosophy of the community college mission. In the past six years, three different St. Clair County Community College alumni have received the award; Chris Kurzweil, Founder of the "I have a Dream Foundation of Port Huron, Inc." in 1997; Frank Shepherd, Founder of 21st Century Newspapers in 2001; and Dan DeGrow this year. St. Clair County Community College currently serves approximately 9,200 students in the Blue Water area with a wide range of credit and non-credit classes. The College offers 52 Associate degree and Certificate programs and 55 seamless transfer program options. A variety of Bachelor and Master degree programs are available locally through the SC4 University Center. The College provides career development, personal and professional development, business and industrial training and community enrichment for citizens of all ages. New resources include online and fast track courses. The full-service, main campus is located in downtown Port Huron, with Thumb Area Centers located in Algonac, Bad Axe, Imlay City, Peck and Yale. St. Clair County Community College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. |
