SC4 online professors will advance skills
Two cutting-edge online professors at St. Clair County Community College (SC4) have been awarded special scholarships through the Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative (MCCVLC) Scholarship Program in Distance Learning. The MCCVLC program administers a W. K. Kellogg Foundation grant of $500 per recipient to participate in advanced training in online teaching and learning. SC4 will match the scholarships with professional development funds. Linda Becker, Professor of Nursing will use the scholarship toward pursuit of her Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from California State University, Haywood. The Certificate consists of four graduate-level courses, each offered during a five-week class session. Scholarship winner Larry Mavis, Professor of Chemistry, will complete a Faculty Certification Program from the Electronic Learning Institute. Through this program, an instructor can be assured that the highest quality of online web-based teaching and learning is taking place. Bob Lowrie, SC4 Director of Curriculum and Articulation, nominated the two leaders for their positive attitudes and innovative efforts to develop college courses for delivery via the Internet. "Professor Mavis and Professor Becker have participated effectively in collaborative workshops and have willingly shared their knowledge and ideas for the betterment of distance education," Mr. Lowrie said. The college's online options have grown to include courses in chemistry and nursing, as well as business, math, English, advertising design, computers, electronics, geography, study skills, science, office administration, education and astronomy. For more information on distance learning, contact Bob Lowrie at 810-989-5525 or blowrie@stclair.cc.mi.us, or visit www.sc4.cc. St. Clair County Community College currently serves approximately 10,000 students in the Blue Water area with a wide range of credit and non-credit classes. The College offers 51 Associate degree and Certificate programs and 55 seamless transfer program options. A variety of Bachelor and Master degree programs are available locally through the SC4 University Center. The College provides career development, personal and professional development, business and industrial training and community enrichment for citizens of all ages. New resources include online and fast track courses. The full-service, main campus is located in downtown Port Huron, with Thumb Area Centers located in Algonac, Bad Axe, Imlay City, Peck and Yale.
