Three events to celebrate SC4 student literary, arts magazine

St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron is celebrating the release of the 49th edition of Patterns, a literary and arts publication featuring student work.

Patterns is the longest continually published community college literary and arts magazine in the state. The writing, art and photography work of 32 students is featured this year.

Three events are planned to celebrate:

  • From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, this year’s visiting authors will be available for an informal discussion of writing and poetry at the Raven Coffeehouse, 932 Military St., Port Huron.
  • From 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22, a reception is planned in the college’s Fine Arts Theatre to honor the SC4 student writers and artists. Selections of their work will be read or displayed.
  • From 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, a social hour with hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a reading of their own works by the visiting authors in SC4’s College Center Atrium.

Free copies of the Patterns magazine will be available at all three events.

This year’s visiting authors are novelist Eileen Pollack and poet Raymond McDaniel.

Pollack’s work includes Paradise, New York, a novel, and The Rabbi in the Attic, a collection of short fiction. Her awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in fiction, two Pushcart Prizes and an honorable mention from Best American Short Stories. Her work has appeared in journals, anthologies and newspapers.

McDaniel writes for Fence magazine’s “Constant Critic.” He teaches at the University of Michigan’s Sweetland Writing Center and hosts the reading series at the Shaman Drum Bookshop in Ann Arbor. McDaniel won the National Poetry Series competition for his book Murder (a Violet).
