Some type of assistance is available. All students qualify for some type of assistance. Don’t pass up the opportunity to apply for financial aid because you feel your income is too high. Be an informed consumer. Take advantage of all sessions offered during campus visits and high school nights to learn more about the financial aid process. These are great ways to get additional information. Start early. Begin looking now for scholarships for which you may be eligible. Learn what the criteria are and if grades are part of the criteria, strive to make the grades you need. Timing is critical! Become knowledgeable about the financial aid process by paying careful attention to published deadlines. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible. Keep in mind that to be considered for any State of Michigan grants, the federal processor must receive your FAFSA application by March 1st each year. Respond promptly to all requests for additional information. When submitting the documents, make sure all documents are complete, signed, dated and that your name and social security number are prominently displayed on each one. Login to the WAVE system to see what documents we still need from you. Keep photocopies of all documents you submit to the Financial Aid Office and other organizations. These copies may come in handy later when you have questions. Maintain a financial aid file in which you keep all correspondence regarding your financial aid applications and inquiries. Once you begin receiving financial aid, it is important to maintain a record of all aid received as some of the aid you receive may be considered taxable income and may be required to be reported on your IRS tax returns. Educational deductions are also allowed on your tax returns. Research outside grants and scholarship sources. Community and religious organizations, your high school guidance counselor and the local library are valuable resources. Remember, scholarships you receive from these sources are considered financial aid and MUST be reported to the Financial Aid Office. Consumer Beware – We do not advocate the use of for-profit scholarship search firms or financial aid consultants. Be wary of organizations that offer guaranteed loans or scholarships if you pay them a fee. Do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office. We are happy to help you and our advice is free. |
