Access to SC4 LRC Databases On-Campus Access Anyone can access LRC databases from on-campus. Go to the LRC homepage at www.sc4.edu/lrc and click on On-campus Databases. Off-Campus Access Currently enrolled students can access most databases from off-campus by logging-in using their Library Card barcode number and 7 digit Student ID number. Here’s how: - Go to the LRC homepage at www.sc4.edu/lrc
- Click on Off-campus Databases
- Click after: To access by entering your library card barcode
- At the prompt, enter all fourteen digits of your Library Card barcode & then your Student ID number (or your SC4 Employee ID number).
- Click Login
- A Welcome screen should appear along with a list of databases. Choose the database you want and begin searching.
NOTE: You must enter your full 14 digit Library Card barcode number (24701000111111) and your 7 digit Student ID number (or Employee ID number) (including any leading 0's...example: 0012345). Troubleshooting problems accessing LRC databases from off-campus Using the LRC electronic databases from outside the SC4 campus requires: - an updated SC4 Library Card
- use of a web browser that supports JavaScript and accepts session Cookies
- having your browser’s Security and Privacy set to low and set to allow pop-ups
If you have problems accessing or searching the databases contact the LRC for help at (810) 989-5640, lrc@sc4.edu, or see if your problem is addressed within our Frequently Asked Questions. Frequently Asked Questions Where do I find my Library Card barcode number and Student ID number? | Your Library Card barcode number is located on the back of your SC4 LRC Library Card. At the login screen, type in the entire 14 digit number with no spaces. Your Student ID number is printed on your course registration confirmation form and available on the WAVE. It is 7 digits long and may start with a zero. (If you are an SC4 employee, use your 7 digit Employee ID number.) | What are the web browser requirements for using the databases and which browsers work best? | Off-campus access to LRC databases works best using Internet Explorer 6 or higher. If you are using an AOL browser, some LRC databases may not work. If you are using the built-in internet browser in AOL, CompuServe, or another ISP, we suggest that you download and use a separate copy of another browser such as Internet Explorer. | My Library Card barcode and Student ID numbers are accepted, but I still get asked for a login name and password. Why? | Most often this problem occurs because the Security on your browser is set too high. To fix this, you’ll need to go into your browser’s Privacy and Security and change the settings to Low and/or Accept All Cookies. To do this in Internet Explorer 6.x go to: Tools / Internet Options / Privacy and set this to Low or Accept All Cookies. Also make sure pop-ups are not blocked. You may also need to go to: Tools / Internet Options / Security and set this to Low. For more details, see the discussion of Cookies. You may also want to try connecting to other databases. If you can get into others, the problem may be a temporary issue in the first database. | When using InfoTracWeb, I get a notice that I have logged out or timed out. Why? | Your antivirus software is logging you out of InfoTracWeb. To fix this, try lowering the Privacy level of your software. Go to Tools / Internet Options, click on Privacy tab, and change the setting to Low. Click on Apply, OK, then InfoTracWeb. | I’m getting a message about pop-up blockers. What should I do? | You may need to change your browser settings to allow pop-ups. One way to do this in Internet Explorer 6.x is to go to: Tools / Internet Options / Privacy and make sure the box next to Block pop-ups is unchecked. | Could my firewall or Norton Internet Security interfere with access to the databases? | If you have firewall software installed on your computer you may have to reconfigure or disable your firewall in order to access the LRC databases. First try disabling the firewall, then try accessing the databases again. If you can get in after doing all that, you may then need to reconfigure the firewall. (See the detailed discussion of Firewalls.) Norton Internet Security may impede access to our online catalog as well as article and information databases. (See the detailed discussion of Norton Internet Security.) | Will the databases work if I am using a Mac? | The Mac internet browser that works best with our databases is Safari. Netscape also may work well. Internet Explorer may not work well with our databases if you are on a Mac. | I keep getting the message, "Sorry, your identification is not recognized." What could be wrong? | Make sure you have entered your Library Card barcode and Student ID numbers correctly. Your Library Card barcode number has 14 digits. Enter all 14 digits without spaces between numbers (example: 24701000234567 not 2 4701 23 4567). In the second box and type in your SC4 Student ID number (or your SC4 Employee number). Your Student ID number must be 7 digits long. If it is less than 7 digits, add zeros to the front to make it 7 digits. You can look-up your Student ID number on the WAVE. Make sure your Library Card is updated. You must update your Library Card each semester that you are enrolled. If you have not updated your card, it may not be valid anymore. Visit the LRC to update your card. You may phone the LRC circulation desk at: (810) 989-5640 with questions about your Library Card. JavaScript must be supported. If your internet browser doesn’t support JavaScript, you may receive an error message that says "Patron Not Found." (See the detailed discussion of JavaScript.) | My browser is set up to accept cookies but some databases still prompt me to type in a username & password. What now? | If you are using Internet Explorer 6 or above, make sure the Privacy settings are set to Override Automatic Cookie Handling. To make this change in your browser: - Click on Tools
- Click on Internet Options
- Click on the Privacy Tab
- Click on the Advanced button
- Make sure the box next to Override Automatic Cookie Handling is unchecked
| I get the message "Time-Out on Reply from Service." | Vendor Time-outs: All vendors set time-outrestrictions differently. You may have been idle too long and your connection has been reset on the vendor's end. When a vendor times you out, you must close your browser and re-connect. Occasionally, due to circumstances beyond our control, access to database services may be periodically disrupted. This happens very rarely. If you repeatedly receive a time-out message please contact the library to let us know. Thank you for your patience. | I get a message that says there are too many users. | Concurrent Users: For some databases, there is a limit to the number of users allowed. If the maximum number of users are logged on, you will receive a message stating such. Close your browser and attempt access later. | What should I do if I get a prompt to download something while trying to access the databases? | You may have a download accelerator loaded on your computer. RealPlayer sometimes installs a download accelerator automatically, or you may have downloaded a separate accelerator. To prevent the pop-up window from appearing on your screen, disable your download accelerator. You will then be able to log-in from home to use our databases. | What if I do not want RealDownload to handle a particular download? | If there's a download link that you don't want RealDownload to handle for you, just hold down the control ("Ctrl") key on your keyboard when you click the link. Your web browser will handle the download as if RealDownload wasn't even there. | I am still having problems accessing the databases. What can I do? | Try any of the following Check your Internet Browser: Verify that you’re using Internet Explorer 6 or higher. The AOL browser will not work with some of our databases. If you are using the built-in internet browser in America Online, CompuServe, or another ISP, we suggest that you download and use a separate copy of another browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. Verify that cookies are enabled: To get off-campus access to the LRC databases, your browser must accept cookies. (See the detailed discussion Cookies.) JavaScript: To access some of our databases, you must use a browser that supports JavaScript. Without it running, your pages will appear blank. Please make sure you have not disabled JavaScript in your browser. (See the detailed discussion of JavaScript.) | JavaScript To access some of our databases, you must use a browser that supports JavaScript. Without it running, your pages will appear blank. Please make sure you have not disabled JavaScript in your browser. Internet Explorer 6.x does not come equipped with Java, so you may have to download Java Virtual Machine (JVM) yourself from the internet. If you don't have Java on your PC, you can download it for free from java.com/en/index.jsp or from java.sun.com/getjava/download.html. It will take a few minutes. After the automatic download and installation are complete, restart your computer. Cookies In order to get off-campus access to LRC databases, your web browser must be enabled to accept cookies. Verifying that cookies are enabled on your computer The authentication program we use for off-campus access to our databases requires cookies in order to work properly. Additionally, many of the databases themselves require cookies in order to allow you access. If you have cookies disabled on your computer, or if a cookie is corrupted, you will not be able to access the databases and you might see an invalid authorization notice. If you are not sure what cookies are, you can get general information about them at www.cookiecentral.com/faq. To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 6.x go to: Tools / Internet Options / Privacy and set this to Low and/or to Accept All Cookies. You may also need to go to: Tools / Internet Options / Security and set this to Low. Deleting cookies from your computer If cookies are enabled, but logging-in from off-campus still doesn't work, try deleting all cookies and then try logging-in again. Many times the cookie that our Remote Patron Authentication leaves on your hard drive becomes corrupted and needs to be deleted. To delete cookies in Internet Explorer 6.x choose the "Tools" pull-down menu and select "Internet Options." The "Internet Options" dialog box will open with the "General" tab showing. Mid-way down the box, you'll see a heading labeled "Temporary Internet Files" with three buttons labeled "Delete Cookies," "Delete Files" and "Settings." Click on the "Delete Cookies" button. A confirmation box will appear that says "Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?" Click OK. Close your browser and then re-open it. You should now be able to access the databases. Clearing temporary internet files (cache) from your computer Once you've cleared the cookies from your browser, you may also need to clear your temporary internet files to ensure that your browser is pulling a fresh copy of the web page, and not an old copy that's stored on your hard drive. Every internet browser keeps copies of the web pages you visit in its memory (or cache). This process facilitates a quicker download when you re-visit that page. Clearing the cache forces the browser to actually re-visit the server and get a fresh copy of a particular webpage rather than using the cached copy. For Internet Explorer 6.x and above you can clear the cache by choosing the “Tools” pull-down menu and choosing "Internet Options." Under the “General” tab, click the "Delete Files" button under the heading "Temporary Internet Files," then click OK. Close the browser and then re-open it. Firewalls If you have firewall software installed on your computer (like Norton Home Firewall, McAfee Personal Firewall, etc.) you may have to reconfigure or disable your firewall in order to access the databases. First try disabling the firewall then try to access the databases again. If you can get in now, you will need to reconfigure the firewall. Many firewalls automatically block cookies, Java/JavaScript, and .exe files. If your browser accepts cookies and you are still getting prompted for a user name and password, you probably need to change the firewall configuration to accept cookies that come from the SC4 LRC database vendors, and to process Java/JavaScript and .exe files. Because firewall settings may need to be adjusted to allow access to our databases, you may want to disable your firewall while accessing LRC databases and re-enable it when you are finished. In some cases, it could be that your ISP owns the firewall. If that’s the case, you will need to contact your ISP for assistance. If you are in an office there may be a single firewall protecting the whole organization. Your tech support staff will need to configure the firewall to allow third party cookies for you to be able to access LRC databases. Norton: Internet Security, Personal Firewall, or Antivirus Unfortunately, many computer applications have compatibility issues with one another. Norton Internet Security may impede access to our article & information databases. The setting that sometimes blocks access to our resources is called Browser Privacy. Browser Privacy prevents websites from finding out which website you visited last. For our login system to work on your computer, your browser must be able to tell the login system which website you last visited. When Browser Privacy is enabled, this is impossible. If you disable this feature while you use our electronic resources, you should not have any access problems. You may rest assured that our databases do not put any harmful cookies or spyware on your machine. Here is how to disable and re-enable Browser Privacy: Disabling Browser Privacy - On the left side of the Norton Internet Security window, click “Privacy Control”
- Click “Settings For”
- Click “Custom Level”
- In the “Customize Privacy Settings” dialog box, un-check the box that says “Enable Browser Privacy”
Enabling Browser Privacy - On the left side of the Norton Internet Security window, click “Privacy Control”
- Click “Settings For”
- Click “Custom Level”
- In the “Customize Privacy Settings” dialog box, check “Enable Browser Privacy”
Norton has a separate Cookie Blocking control panel. If you block the library's site even one time using your Norton software, you may not be able to access LRC databases. If you suspect that has happened, follow these instructions for how to change the Cookie Blocking setting in Norton, then click on the browser you are using, and follow the instructions for clearing cookies and history before you try logging-in again. To change the Cookie Blocking setting - On the left side of the Norton Internet Security window, click “Privacy Control”
- Click “Settings For”
- Click “Custom Level”
- Select “None” to enable all cookies. You may want to change the Cookie Blocking setting back to High or Medium after you’re finished using the LRC databases.
Cookie Blocking has three settings: ■ High: Blocks all cookies ■ Medium: Alerts you each time a cookie is encountered ■ None: Allows all cookies Last update: November 2007 |
