Quick tips for interviewing and planning your job search

Interviewing Tips - Mock interviews for any career field can be conducted and critiqued in one hour sessions. As with resumes, appointments are necessary. For helpful hints
and suggestions, consider the following prior to an important interview:

  • Dress appropriately
  • Arrive on time (15 minutes early if possible)
  • Attend to personal hygiene the day of the interview
  • Remember to smile
  • Make direct eye contact
  • Introduce yourself
  • Firm handshake
  • Maintain professional composure
  • Answer questions truthfully and coherently
  • Use active verbs
  • Use correct grammar and diction
  • Offer examples of your accomplishments
  • Avoid possible offensive or distracting behaviors
  • Write thank you notes to anyone you meet

Job Search Planning - To achieve long term success in your career follow the ABC's of the job search:

Allocate time specifically for your search. Finding a job is a full-time job.
Believe in yourself. Focus on your short and long term career goals.
Creativity in your job search.

Research traditional (want ads, cold calls, mass mailings) and nontraditional (networking, internships, and employment services) job search techniques. Also, check out the company in which you are interested. Public libraries, such as SC4's Learning Resource Center houses a Career Resource Section in the lower level.

Additional sources to research:

  • DOT - Dictionary of Occupational Titles
  • OOH - Occupational Outlook Handbook
  • GOE - Guide for Occupational Exploration
  • Standard and Poor's Register of Corporations, Directors/Executives
  • Thomas' Register of American Manufacturers

Resume Assistance - Professional, individualized resume development and critique sessions are available by appointment through the Student Success Center.

Pointers for the Perfect Resume:

  • Be factual regarding your education and experience
  • Deliver information to emphasize strengths
  • Be brief, one page is appropriate
  • Type or word-process
  • Error-free (have at least two people proof it)
  • Include name, address, phone number, education, work experience,
    honors
  • Stress your skills and abilities
  • Use action words and phrases for "power"
