How to Apply for Financial Aid

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form must be completed each academic year you are enrolled and generally becomes available in December for the coming academic year (i.e. December 2010 for the 2011-2012 academic year). The FAFSA cannot be filed before January 1st each year but should be filed as soon after January 1st as possible.

Note: The federal processor must receive your FAFSA application by March 1st for you to be considered for state funds. Once you have filed the FAFSA, you will be considered for federal and state grants, loans and work-study (See Completing the FAFSA for more information).

If you are in high school, contact your high school counselor to see what applications they may have for private scholarships. They may have applications from organizations in your local area that offer scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Check with your employer, your church or local organizations such as the YMCA to see if they offer any scholarships for which you are eligible.

Check out scholarship search services on the Web. They are a great source of information on scholarships. Listed below are some good sites for you to try:

A word of caution when dealing with scholarship search companies – beware of companies that charge a fee for their services. Most reputable companies will not charge you a fee for their scholarships.
