    • SC4 names Joel Whymer new women’s basketball head coach

Joel Whymer has grown up around the St. Clair County Community College basketball program, from his days as a ball boy to a summer camper to a participant in pickup games.Joel Whymer

The 2003 Port Huron Northern graduate returned to the college Tuesday, May 27, in another capacity: women's basketball head coach.

Whymer, 29, replaces Michael Groulx, who was recently named the associate head coach with the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball program. Groulx, an Armada graduate, led the Skippers to three consecutive trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II nationals.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to be the women's head coach at St. Clair County Community College," Whymer said. "Coaching at the collegiate level has always been something I have wanted to do.

"I'm going to work hard to keep the program successful, and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Whymer, a Grand Valley State University graduate and special education teacher at Marine City High School, has spent the past two seasons coaching the boys basketball team at Marine City. He also served as the St. Clair junior varsity boys basketball coach one season.

Whymer, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard, was a three-year varsity player at Northern and is the school's all-time leading scorer. He was a two-time all-Macomb Area Conference Red Division and all-Blue Water Area selection. As a senior, he received first-team Associated Press Class A all-state honors.

Following his prep career, Whymer played basketball his freshman and sophomore seasons at Lake Superior State University. He transferred to Grand Valley State University and helped the Lakers win back-to-back Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and earn two trips to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight nationals.

While finishing up his education at Grand Valley, Whymer coached with the Grand Rapids Storm Amateur Athletics Union program and also played and coached with The Family, an AAU program in Detroit.

"Joel brings collegiate playing experience as well as heading coaching experience to the program," said Dale Vos, the SC4 men's basketball coach and athletic director.

"Even though he never went to school here, he has always been a part of the Skipper program and family."
