    • Ray Cornwell named head coach of SC4 Volleyball program

A familiar face is taking over the St. Clair County Community College volleyball program.

Ray Cornwell has been named coach of the Skippers, taking over for Kristen Michaelis.  Ray Cornwell Jr
Cornwell was an assistant for Michaelis during the 2015 season, in which the Skippers were Michigan Community College Athletic Association Eastern Conference Co-Champions.

“I’m very excited about taking over,” Cornwell said. “We’re going to miss Kristen a ton. She came in and we had a great time with her last year. But I’m very excited about taking over at SC4.”

Cornwell has been around for much of the SC4 volleyball team’s success in the past two decades, as he first joined the program in 1999 as an assistant coach. While there have been breaks, he has spent much of the time since as a member of the SC4 volleyball coaching staff.

In that time, the Skippers have enjoyed quite a bit of success. Cornwell was an assistant in 2000 and 2004 when the Skippers won National Junior College Athletic Association national titles. Both of those teams also won state titles, as did teams he coached in 2001 and 2002.

“I’ve been in that league for a long time,” Cornwell said. “I know all the other coaches throughout the league, and pretty much know how they operate. I’m very excited to get back at it again.”

Cornwell was inducted into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. On top of his accomplishments at SC4, he also coached the Blue Water Volleyball Club to multiple Amateur Athletics Union state titles from 1996 to 2004.

As a volleyball player, Cornwell was part of a national championship men’s team in 1997, and a state championship men’s team in 2006.

“Ray has been with the program almost since its inception,” SC4 Athletic Director Dale Vos said. “He brings a lot of experience to the position, and he’s an extremely competitive person.”
