Writing Center

Our goal is to help you improve as a writer and to assist you in developing essential writing skills.

The center offers 30-minute tutoring sessions with student writing consultants who are able to assist you in every step of the writing process. The center is not an editing service or drop-off service. Writing consultants will not simply “fix” your paper or edit errors. You must attend a tutoring session to receive help with your writing.

Assistance is not limited to English classes and is available for any class.

Tutors can help with:

  • Brainstorming
  • Developing a thesis
  • Research and citation
  • Drafting
  • Revising

Answers to other frequently asked questions:

Is the Writing Center open during spring and summer sessions?
The Writing Center isn't open during spring and summer sessions.

Can I type and print my assignment at the Writing Center?
You may use the computers in the Writing Center to work on your assignment. The Writing Center also offers free printing of assignments (if you work with a consultant on your assignment).

How long are tutoring sessions?
Tutoring sessions with our trained writing consultants last about 30 minutes. If your session runs longer than 30 minutes, we ask that you make another appointment or return to Writing Center at a later time to receive additional assistance once you have continued work on your assignment.

Is there a charge for meeting with a writing consultant?
We do not charge for writing consultations.

Will I get an “A” on my paper if I meet with a writing consultant?
Our goal at the Writing Center is to help you become a better writer. We do not guarantee a specific grade for any assignment.

My assignment is due in an hour. Is that enough time to fix my paper?
An hour is not enough time to revise your assignment. Do not wait until the last minute to visit the Writing Center. Visit us as soon as possible so that you will have time to draft, revise and visit us again if necessary.

What should I bring with me when I meet with a writing consultant?

  • Bring your assignment sheet so that your writing consultant has a better understanding of the paper's requirements.
  • Bring any notes, prewriting or other materials you feel may help you draft and revise your assignment.
  • Bring at least one copy of your draft (if you have one) so that both you and your writing consultant may review your paper.

What if I don't have a draft yet?
We help students at every step of the writing process. If you don't have a draft, stop by with your assignment and any questions, and we'll help you get started with your writing.
